Oh, Boy Scout Camp...

Boy Scout camp is probably one of the most...interesting...parts of my life. I've been going there since 2000 (my last year being 2006). I went as a camper first, then got offered a job in 2005 to help out for the final two weeks, then went back in 2006 again to work for the whole summer.

Going as a camper, a lot of interesting things used to happen. We made sligshots in trees to shoot rocks out into the lake, we did some random hiking, just little boy scout stuff.

One time, we were sitting around the campfire telling stories. It was, of course, a full moon because those just happen to be the best times to tell scary stories, right? Well, my dad decides to tell us about the Kakooey bird. I have no idea how the hell to even begin to spell that, but that's the best I got for now.

The Kakooey bird is this large, Albatross-like bird. (If you don't know what an Albatross is, it's a huge ass bird. With really long wings.) He said it only comes out on the full moon, somewhat like a werewolf. The catch with the Kakooey bird is, it flies around yelling (or cawing, or whatever birds do...) "Kakoo! Kakoo! Kakoo!" If you look at the bird when it does its call, it swoops down from the sky and gouges your eyes out.

I think I was maybe 11 or 12 when I heard this story, and for some reason it just scared the hell out of me. I couldn't sleep at all that night. When the people in the tent next to me tossed or turned, their ENTIRE tent would move around and sound like wings flapping.

Later on in the night, maybe at about 1 or 2, I heard noises outside. They were footsteps walking around outside our tent down by the beach. I wasn't imagining them at all, I just didn't want to get up and look. (And of course, people started to toss and turn when I heard the footsteps, so I definitely thought the Kakooey bird was walking around outside of our tents.)

As hard as it was, I eventually got to sleep. Come to find out, the footsteps I heard outside my tent were actually a mountain lion. So, in retrospect, it was probably a good idea I didn't get up to check it out. But the timing of the mountain lion walking around, the story, and the "flapping" of the tent really freaked me out.

Stupid Boy Scout camp.
